Prof. (Dr.) Prakash Kumar Hota is working as Professor and Head of Training & Placement Department at the University College of Engineering, Burla. He has passed his B.E. in Electrical & Electronics Engineering in first class with distinction from National Institute of Technology (Formerly REC), Tiruchirapalli and M.Sc. (Engg.) in Electrical Engineering from Sambalpur University.
Dr. Hota received the Q.I.P. scholarship from MHRD, New Delhi and then obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He is the author of many articles published in reputed international and national journals on applications of soft-computing techniques. Dr. Hota has actively participated in various sponsored projects supported by AICTE, New Delhi. He has organized many AICTE-ISTE sponsored short term courses and seminars in the field of soft-computing techniques & their applications and advanced microprocessors & microcontrollers. He has been honored with Best Engineering College Teacher Award - 2002 in the Orissa State by Indian Society For Technical Education, New Delhi for his outstanding contribution to academic and student community and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Memorial Award - 2000 by Institution of Engineers (India) for his research publication "Radial Basis Function Network applied to Economic Generation Scheduling". Besides, he has received various recognitions at the state, national and international levels. His name has been listed in "The Contemporary Who's Who" 2002-2003, published by American Biographical Institute, USA on the basis of merited accomplishment and success in Contemporary Society. He is also a Life Member of ISTE and IE(I).
Academic Specialization
Dr. P. K .Hota completed his B.E. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering with distinction from N.I.T., Tiruchirapalli (formerly R.E.C.) in the year 1985. He did his M. Sc. (Engg.) from U.C.E., Burla in 1992 with first class in Industrial Power Control and Electric Drives. He successfully completed his Ph D(Engg.) at Jadavpur University, Kolkata in 1999. His thesis title was - Some studies on applications of intelligent techniques to multi objective generation dispatch and hydro-thermal scheduling. His field of specialization includes Soft Computing Applications to Electric Power System, Microprocessors & Digital Electronics and Microcontrollers & Embedded systems.
Teaching Experience
Has a teaching experience of over 20 years and 6 months at U.C.E., Burla. He joined here on 5th September 1987 as a lecturer and over the time, has turned out as one of the most efficient Professors. The various courses taught by him at B. Tech level are Digital Electronics, Microprocessors and Microcontrollers, Computational Intelligence and Advanced Computer Architecture. At M. Tech level, he teaches Advanced Microprocessors & their applications, Power System Dynamics, Computer Analysis of Power Systems and Operation and Control of Deregulated Power Systems. He also teaches at MCA level in Microprocessors & Assembly Language Programming, Simulation and Modeling and Computer System Architecture.
Research Experience
Dr. Hota has got ample research experience over the years. He has published 07 papers in reputed International journals and 11 papers in National Journals. He has also published 27 papers in National/International Conferences/Seminars. He has guided 13 M.Tech Theses and 01 Ph.D thesis. 03 scholars are undergoing their doctoral works under him and he has completed 03 sponsored research projects successfully

He has completed various projects sponsored by AICTE. He completed a project on Intelligent Soft Computing Approach to Power System Operational and Control funded under AICTE, New Delhi, R&D scheme worth Rs. 9 lacs in 2001 to 2003. Another project titled Modernization of Power Electronics and Drives laboratory, funded by AICTE, New Delhi, MODROBS scheme amounting Rs. 12 lacs was completed under him between 2003 and 2005. Finally, a project titled Power quality improvement of distribution system, funded by AICTE, New Delhi, R&D scheme of worth Rs. 3.5 lacs was successfully accomplished under him between 2004 and 2007.
Laboratories/Facilities Developed
He is the mastermind behind some of the best cutting edge technological facilities setups of the college. He developed the Digital Electronics Laboratory and a Microprocessor Laboratory for a batch of 35 B.Tech students respectively. He also set a Soft-computing Laboratory for B.Tech/M.Tech/Research Scholars. He also set the ERNET's VSAT Broadband based (64 kbps) internet connectivity for 10 user's in the Central Internet Facility. Currently he is busy in the extension of existing 64kbps internet connectivity to 2mbps and Modernization of Power Electronics and Drives Laboratory.
